Homeownership
Our homeownership focus aims to create opportunities for African American families to obtain and retain their homes. Our goal is to redefine affordable housing, including refurbishing old and building new properties to establish infrastructure within disinvested, blighted neighborhoods. We look to provide opportunities for African American construction and renovation businesses to work in partnership with us, revitalizing communities one BLOCK at a time.
Tax Sale Benevolence Program
Every year, thousands of families in Cook County, IL are at risk of losing their homes due to unpaid property taxes. To address this crisis in the Woodlawn neighborhood on Chicago’s Southside, Sunshine Gospel Ministries has created the Tax Sale Benevolence Program, which removes families from the property tax sale list, using funds raised specifically for this purpose. The BLOCK Movement is pleased to support their efforts by ushering families from program intake to financial education and coaching, advising on resources and opportunities for property upkeep and other needed services for the maintenance of this most significant asset – their home. This is all part of our one-year commitment to helping families thrive.
Property Tax Relief Program
In 2021, over 6,000 families were in jeopardy of losing their homes in the TY2018 Cook County, IL property tax sale. NHS has created the grant funded Property Tax Relief Program to help families redeem their homes in some of Chicago’s westside neighborhoods, including Austin, West Humboldt Park, and Lawndale. The BLOCK Movement is pleased to support their efforts by ushering families from program intake through the application process to property redemption and homeownership sustainability.

Our Homeownership Essentials workshops provide valuable information to homeowners and homebuyers alike in the areas of budgeting, banking, and home maintenance.
